India’s paper industry is witnessing one of the fastest growths anywhere in the world. According to the Indian Paper and Manufacturers Association (IPMA), the paper industry is expected to grow at 6–8% per annum. The industry is also emerging as a major exporter of paper products. In fact, in the last two financial years, India has become a net exporter of paper in volume terms. Paper exports from India have been on an uptrend since the last five years. In financial year 2022, India’s exports of paper and paper board products were valued at approximately 3.25 billion U.S. dollars, according to IPMA. Exports of paper and paperboard from India jumped nearly 80 per cent in FY 2021-22, according to IPMA. The export growth has straddled across different grades of paper. “In volume terms, paper exports from India have gone up four times from 0.66 million tonnes in FY17 to 2.85 million tonnes in FY22,” the IPMA statement said.
